Tips for Using Native Vegetated Mat

Many people choose to use the Native Vegetated Mat because it gives them a finished look upon installation. There is not waiting for seeds or small plants to grow, once it is installed it will look fully vegetated. Native Vegetated Mat is a pre-vegetated mat with deep rooting native species that will lay over the Envirolok system like sod and stapled into place. The plant roots will then grow through the bags and into the parent material, strengthening the overall system. It is important to note several tips when using Native Vegetated Mats.

Tip #1: Place Soil Over the Bags

Once the Envirolok bags are in place, you will want to cover them with soil before you install the Native Vegetated Mat. You do not want any air pockets or hollow spaces underneath the Native Vegetated Mat because it will dry out the roots. By placing soil over the bags, you eliminate those gaps and give the roots a better chance of developing through the bags.

Tip #2: Cool and Moist

It is important to keep the Native Vegetated Mats cool and moist at all times at the install site. You will want to install the mats within 48 hours of delivery.

Tip #3: Watering After Installation

Water immediately after installation. Then, make sure to water every day for the first week after installation. After that, water one inch per week until vegetation is established. Monitor plant health during this time for signs of drying out, especially during times of extreme weather or drought.

Tip #4: Growing Times

Our sister company, Agrecol grows the Native Vegetated Mats and they will be available starting mid-July through October of every year. Space in the greenhouse is limited so the sooner you place your order the better.

Tip #5: Native Vegetated Mat Edges

You will want to install the Native Vegetated Mats tightly together to prevent dry back or wicking. Tuck the edges of the mat into the ground by cutting a lip into the soil with a spade.

Tip #6: Do Not Burn Vegetation

Do not burn any native vegetation that grows on the Envirolok system. The bags are flammable.
