+ Project Snapshot

In August 2007, near-record rain caused flash floods and high water levels throughout the Midwest. A lake resident’s existing railroad tie seawall failed, drifting into the lake. Envirolok was chosen to replace the seawall because it is made from soft, durable fabric that is safe for children, pets, and recreational water equipment. A 65’x4’ structure was constructed to replace the seawall, and 3’ was buried below the waterline. A floating turbidity barrier was installed to protect the lake from sedimentation during the construction.  Approximately 600 native plant plugs were planted between the bag courses to provide additional stability to the shoreline, improved habitat, and capture and clean run-off before it reaches the lake. Unlike traditional rip rap and other seawalls, the Envirolok system also reduces reflective wave energy, heat transfer, and potential safety hazards. The residents choose to include a rain garden along their shoreline, and their Envirolok system continues to hold strong.
